Sundarban Folk Festival 2021

Sundarban Folk Festival; 28th-30th December, 2021


The Sundarban Folk Festival was celebrated in Pakhiralay, Jamespur of Gosaba block and Gosaba Beacon Bungalow from 28thto 30thDecember, 2021. The folk art forms of Sundarban performed in this festival were Jhumur, Banbibir Pala and Bhatiyali. Nearly 200 folk artists participated in this festival comprising of 60 artists practicing Banbibir Pala, 6 Bhatiyali singers and 130 Jhumur performers.  Jhumur and Bhatiyali were performed from 11 am to 2 pm at Beacon Bungalow. The artists also performed Banbibir Pala, Jhumur and Bhatiyali in Pakhiralay and several hotels in Jamespur in the evening

In these three days of this festival, the festival reached out approximately 7000 audience. The festival was enjoyed by both tourists and the local villagers. Visitors were delighted to experience all the folk art performances of Sundarban in one place as most of them were not aware about it. Some tourists also took contact details of the artists and some have even booked the artists directly for their upcoming events.


The artists got a lot of exposure through the festival as their performances got published in the newspaper and social media platforms. The artists have developed their skills and gainedexperience by participating in this festival. After getting exposure and the opportunity to communicate with the visitors directly, now the artists are more eager to perform outside of their local areas. The tour operators and the local villagers requested another weekend promotion of Sundarban in this winter, if possible and also request the annual Sundarban Folk Festival to be held in the last week of Dec 2022 to attract more visitors and to make them aware of Sundarban’s traditional art forms.
